"Wafting II Is curated by Yumi Inoue, a Kyoto-based dye artist. Her curatorial intention is to introduce a new wave of dye artists to an American audience. Several of the exhibiting artists work in traditional Japanese dye techniques, such as katazome, yuzen or rozome (batik dyeing) with silk and fabric. Others have developed their own techniques and directions through the combination of embroidery and drawing with basic rice paper dyeing techniques. 

Traditional Japanese dye techniques produce a refined design through disciplined processes. In contrast, several of the artists selected by Inoue defy Japanese dye tradition by completing work in a spontaneous manner. As a result, new and dynamic dye techniques convey artistic energy directly to the viewer"
